Questions to Ask When Hiring a Caregiver



  • If a caregiver cannot report to a job, is a trained backup available?
  • What types of training has the caregiver been given?
    • e.g. Dementia training, CPR, First Aid, lifts and transfers, nutrition, working with oxygen
  • Has the caregiver been given background checks prior to hiring?
    • Local, state, and national, criminal and sexual offender registry, driving record, credit history
  • Does the client and/or family have the opportunity to meet and approve of the caregiver prior to assignment?
  • Who supervises the caregivers?
    • Do supervisors perform surprise on-site visits?
  • Who is responsible for withholding payroll taxes?
    • Social Security, Medicare, Income tax, Unemployment and Workmen’s Compensation
    • If the employer does not pay these taxes, the client is responsible.
  • Do Liability Insurance and Workmen’s Compensation Insurance cover the caregivers?
  • Are caregivers covered by dishonesty insurance? (i.e. are they bonded?)
  • Who supervises the client/caregiver relationship when the client lives alone or has no family nearby?
    • Example: Keeping track of medications and/or appointments.
  • Does the caregiving agency follow standards and ethical guidelines of the National Private Duty Home Care Association?
  • Is the agency a member of the New Mexico Chapter of the National Private Duty Home Care Association?
    • Not required, but indicates compliance with national standards and ethics.
  • Is the caregiver authorized to work in the United States?
