In this day and age, there are multitudes of lotions, potions, anti-age this, miracle diet that; but the truth is, and always will be, that any person on Earth who wants to better their life can do so without buying into the hype of modern scams and sales pitches. It starts with a simple spark of positive thinking and is only actualized by perseverance. Of course, it can help quite a bit when you have someone like a care partner by your side encouraging you along. 1.) “ZZzzzzZZZZzzzzzzz”….Do you get enough sleep? If you are 65 or older, you should be getting at least 7-8 hours of restful sleep every night. Not getting these necessary amounts of shut eye can lead to problems with memory and attention span, daytime fatigue, change in mood, and even more night time falls. Simply put, poor sleeping patterns equals a poorer quality of life. The tips listed below such as exercise can play a major role in getting the kind of sleep you need. It’s all part of a holistic form of care which supports and helps to maintain the balance in one’s life.
2.) Exercise! Did you know that moderate to heavy exercisers have half the risk of developing dementia compared with less active people? Researchers from the long-running Framingham Heart Study reported this information in July at an Alzheimer’s conference in Honolulu (See full article here). Earlier studies also found exercise helps with sleep problems. People who get sufficient exercise are known to fall asleep faster, and stay asleep longer. Take a minute to imagine your body as a working machine capable of lasting you a lifetime if it is properly fueled and kept in working order. What many of us don’t pay attention to, or overlook, in regards to our health is exactly what we pay for in the long run. By replacing that extra cup of coffee with green tea, your wonder bread sandwich with a whole grain choice, or switching out your pudding dessert for a bowl of fresh strawberries, you are giving your body and mind a fighting chance to enrich your life. The more colorful the food choices the better, as fresh veggies and fruits have been shown to improve heart health and even lower the risk of Alzheimer’s and certain cancers. Heart healthy antioxidants found in Acai berries (and many other berries), teas, and citrus fruits help to keep cells young and maintained. The calcium, magnesium, and potassium found in most rich leafy greens such as spinach are known to fight the risk of osteoporosis and high blood pressure.
